JUNE JOURNEY: Paralyzed by Expectations

Paralyzed by Expectations

by Guest Blogger Michelle Rayburn

Some days, I’m paralyzed by expectations. I wake up each morning to a daunting to-do list and each item represents someone’s expectations—my own and those of others. As I face the list, I confront the reality that I cannot possibly accomplish that many things in one day. I begin the day with a sense of failed expectation.

Shortly after scanning my to-do list, I open my inbox and see all of the e-mails to which I haven’t replied. I know these people expect a reply, and soon. I flag a few messages and think, I’ll tackle that on my lunch break. Then I move on to start a project from my to-do list. I choose one that I think I can finish on this day, but as I wait for the creative energy needed for the project to fire up, my obsession with what still needs to get done just snuffs it back out. And so, I sit, too paralyzed to be productive, and too overwhelmed to meet expectations.

Somehow, tackling a project that’s free of expectations seems less overwhelming. So I scrub the bathtub. Sort the junk drawer. Hose off the deck. There’s no pressure in these tasks. I can deceive myself into believing I’m productive because I’m busy. Yet, tomorrow, I’ll still wake up to a huge to-do list.

If, like me, you’ve ever felt like you were spinning in a cycle of expectations with such centrifugal force that you can’t seem to get out, you know how it consumes you emotionally and spiritually. You know how hopeless it feels. I’m working on learning how to manage expectations.

A little while ago, I set some ambitious goals and shared them with fellow writer, Kathy Carlton Willis. A few weeks later, I sent a desperate e-mail to her whining about my lack of progress. She sent back wise words advising me to figure out what was the most important thing I needed to do and focus on that one thing right now.

That to-do list represents infinite opportunities to fail to meet expectations, and the only way I can get through it is by breaking it into manageable pieces and chewing on one piece at a time. I think it’s time for me to learn to do less multi-tasking and more uni-tasking. Today, I’ll write several letters and e-mails that need to get done. If that’s all I do, I’ll have finished something.

New Year's Resolutions

Normally I set a bunch of annual goals rather than making resolutions. And I still might do that some, especially with my business and with ministry. But to be honest, I sense that God is calling me to a different focus this year. Not so much about bettering "me." In fact, a reduced "me" focus is called for. Goals this year will be focused on ways for me to grow relationships (with God and others) and ways I can serve others.

Maybe I'll toy around with heightening all 5 senses, not just physically, but internally:
Focus
Taste
Feel
Hear
Smell
Savor

Let's see how that shapes up this year.

Proverbs 34:8 (NLT) Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!

Walls Coming Down!

When I first started this blog in November 2005, I was full of ideas to share with my very few readers (mostly family and friends). My goal for the blog started out simple: to stay connected with those special to me. Then as time went on, I added more to the blog and more reasons for the blog. But about three years ago I started learning "rules" that put a damper on my blog-writing enthusiasm. I became too concerned with what some would think about my posts (too personal, too much drama to be real, too "religious," too too...). And this last year, my blog posts dwindled to almost nothing. In 2010, I'm going to find my blog voice again.

So, today, the walls come down!

Dream Bigger!

I'm traveling on a 10-day roatrip with assistant and friend, Gina Stinson. Her husband Bruce asked me one of my favorite questions tonight, and now I can't sleep, thinking about it. He asked me if what I'm doing now is "living the dream" of what I dream of doing in my life. My reply was, all this and MORE. I'm a big dreamer, and God is an even BIGGER dreamer, coming up with all sorts of exciting and challenging plans for my life.

The projects I'd love to work on are ones I sense God leading me to work on--some with church and community ministry, some with business (which is also a ministry).

The hard part is to figure out how to get from Point A (where I am now) to Point B (where I believe God is leading me). I don't want to have a 40-year journey in the wilderness, if I can help it! Just like we used mapquest to figure out our road trip route, taking us from our current position to our destination, I wish I could figure out a way to mapquest my life.

But there really is a simple way. Allow God to dream big dreams for me, and then obey Him as He leads each step. Each decision, each contact, each project, yielded to His direction. Yet, it's not always as simple as it sounds.

But it IS exciting. Maybe, just maybe the journey is as important as the destination. Gina and I are looking forward to the road trip as much as the conference, and maybe my life journey of getting from where I am to each task God has for me is just as important as the arrival. Gina and I will visit in the car as we travel. God and I will fellowship on my life trips to various God-directed tasks and projects. On this road trip we have to trust the map to get us there even on roads we've never driven, and we have to trust the vehicle to function properly. In my life journey, I have to trust to get ahead too. Trust God. And trust that God-given gut instinct He places inside of me.

I'm dreaming big dreams, and I'm determined to enjoy the trip as much as the destinations in this great big life God has for me!

New Year Goals for 2009

I'm still working on my goals--it's a work in progress! I'm patterning my goals this year on the desire for GROWTH, following Jesus example as documented in Luke 2:52, which says in the NIV, "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men." So, I have 4 categories this year for my goals:

DISCERNMENT GOALS
PHYSICAL GOALS
SPIRITUAL GOALS
SOCIAL GOALS

Today I will focus on the obvious one, PHYSICAL. I need to figure out a way to be disciplined in this so that it doesn't become just a well-intentioned yet unachieved goal year after year. My "want-to" is in place. I know this has to become LIFESTYLE changes that stick rather than a diet and exercise band-aid that ends up coming off.

So, to put these desires into measurable goals, here goes:

1. I will lose an average of 6-8 pounds a month by incorporating healthier eating and exercise choices, using the Guided By Him program.
2. I will journal my food intake and stay accountable to two other buddies.
3. I will find out what sort of exercise I'm capable of doing from my physical therapist, and grow this program throughout the year, as I become more mobile. I will do some sort of exercise program, ramping up the time and intensity, until I'm exercising at least 30 minutes 5 days a week.

If I do all of this, the benefits will be: better health, more energy, smaller clothing sizes, weigh about 70 pounds less by the end of the year (my goal).

Stay tuned for more goals!

Dream Big!

I'm working on dreaming big for 2009--writing down intentional dreams--also called goals. Not just any goals, but those I truly believe God would have for me. I'm challenging my clients to dream big too. A song I really like, with a peppy tune is:

Lyrics

Dream Big Lyrics

I believe that anything is possible
if we understand who Jesus is
I believe there's nothing that can
stop us
if we learn to dream like Jesus did
So don't limit your ambition
to what's commonly defined
God has a special heart
for those who walk outside the line
Don't be afraid to spread your wings

2008 into 2009

One of my biggest frustrations for 2008 has been that I feel like the year lived me rather than me living the year. The second half of the year I feel like I merely existed rather than living intentionally. There were some shining moments, but so many tests and trials that I worked hard to tread water rather than getting to cruise above the waves. Those who don't care for me might say that God was punishing me for something (it's always easy to judge when it's not happening to us!), and those who know me say that I'm being tested and refined. But they also remind me that if I put it down on paper, a lot got done, in spite of the frustrations.

I explained to my friend Cynthia Ruchti last week that whenever I face a new frustration (okay, I'll just say it, a new disappointment), I pray the following:

#1-God, is there some wrongdoing in my life I need to change?
#2-God, is there some way I need to make amends to someone I have wronged?
#3-God, are you trying to teach me something?
#4-God, are you trying to teach someone else something?
#5-God, is there a way you can get glory from this?

My biggest desire for 2009 is to live more intentionally. How can I do that even when I'm faced with a trial outside of my control (like a Hurricane or illness)? That is going to be my biggest life experiment to date.

One discipline I've enjoyed doing for years is an end-of-year evaluation and launch of the New Year with setting the goals God places on my heart. I don't want to just come up with a list of goals and ask God to bless them, I want to seek what HE wants for my life, and put those desires on my goal sheet as He directs.

This year, with my personal and business goal setting, I've come up with the following list of questions to assist the evaluation:

#1-How can we use KCWC (Kathy Carlton Willis Communications) to glorify Him and get the word out about others who glorify Him in 2009?
#2-What are the strengths of the company? What are my own strengths? How can we do more with these attributes?
#3-What are the weaknesses of the company? What are my own weaknesses? How can I delegate more to let go of my weaknesses and let others do what they are good at to free me up to do what I’m good at?
#4-What are some out-of-the-box ideas for our firm?
#5-What new services can we offer our clients in 2009?
#6-How can we build more clientele and give the staff the hours they want and need?
#7-What have been our biggest successes in 2008? Our biggest mistakes? Our biggest disappointments?
#8-Should we change our fees at all for 2009?
#9-Should we give our clients something that is “value added” in the current rates to help them see we are doing our part to give them more for their money?
#10-Who should I hire to do local work that needs to be done here at the “office”?

One of my steps for more intentional living in 2009 is to show up more here on my blog. So come back soon!
